Lin Hsingyueh Biography

Born in Taichung in 1939. During high school, Lin was enlightened by Yang Qi-dong and studied landscape sketching. After graduating from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University, he went to Europe to study painting. In the 1970s, his painting style leaned towards surrealism, employing mysterious colors to express imagery of the sun and moon, animal bones and other subjects transcending life, death, and time. After 1980, his creative themes focused more on interpreting Taiwan's natural landscape and customs. Through personal visits to high mountains, river valleys, and rapid streams, he brought the scenes he witnessed into his paintings, pioneering a creative style that is both magical and abundantly primordial. Beyond creation, he devoted himself to art education, cultural criticism, curating and many other fields, profoundly influencing the development of Taiwan's modern art movement.
